Not one to sit on the social networking sidelines, Disney yesterday unveiled a new social networking site aimed at tweens and preteens dubbed Disney XTreme Digital or Disney XD for short. The hope is that tweens and preteens which already visit the Disney portal in high numbers will migrate to the service to create their own personal web pages. Given the fact that the XD is aimed at the younger set, there will be a series of parental controls limiting the kids ability to share personal information or use bad words, it is Disney after all. It seems the tween/preteen social networking space has been heating up of late, I probably receive at least one random announcement a week from competitors like Whyville announcing a new deal they signed or a big hire they landed. I believe the value around Disney XD is simple: they're are Disney and they have a ton of content to offer this core consumer segment. The XD platform will probably end up serving as just as much a promotional tool for Disney movies and television content as it will be an advertising platform for marketers looking to reach the younger ones. It's a natural move for the home of Mickey, not to mention a smart one.
STAY TUNED, MANY MORE INTERESTING ANNOUNCEMENT COMING FROM WHYVILLE SOON.
