Guys, enter social networking wannabe site Flixster with extreme caution. After a couple of days of researching the site (hey guys it was your fault for spamming our whole company including our no-name email addresses to begin with) here's is what we came up with. Similar to teen social networking site Tagged.com, Flixster "commandeers" your address book from your AOL, Gmail or HotMail account and sends out unsolicited invites to all email addresses within your address book. To a certain degree this lame ass tactic worked well for Tagged as they were able to scale their membership rather quickly, although as we noted last month, there has been a lot of fall out and criticism. For Flixster, a site I really never heard of until the other day, it might help explain why they boast 10 million registered members and 300 million movie ratings. By the way, in case you couldn't tell from the site's name, Flixster is social networking site for movie fans. The tactics used by Flixster to get big real fast would almost certainly end up working against them in the long run, but in the short term, one would have to think that the company's founders and financial backers are looking for a quick financial exit. Jeez, sometimes I have to remind myself that this is 2007 not 1999, because it is starting to feel that way a lot lately.
