Will ABC Family's "Greek" Be A Hit Or A Lightning Rod For Criticism...Or Both?

There is a lot of buzz around a new series that is one part "Animal House" and one part "Undeclared." The funny thing is you won't find the new college series "Greek" airing on MTV, Spike or even Comedy Central. Nope, the new sexed up series featuring body shots (both literally and figuratively) will be airing on ABC Family, home to re-runs of Full House and Pat Robertson's 700 Club. I wonder how he feels about living under the same network umbrella with a show that essentially glorifies the part of college life that many choose to steer far away from. Of course there are always two sides to an argument, and that is certainly the case here. First off, let's be clear about some of the social aspects of college life. The transition from childhood to adulthood during the college years are filled with experimentation, judgment lapses and self discovery. This would include things like consuming alcohol and partying. Without a doubt "Greek" will focus on these antics and activities. No harm, no foul, right? Well, think about the other side of the equation. The name of network airing "Greek" includes the word "Family," it's ABC Family not ABC College or ABC Undressed. So perhaps, the network isn't the most appropriate platform to air such a racy series as "Greek" looks to be. The former however seems to have outweighed the latter, especially if you look at the growing popularity of ABC Family among the teen and young adult audience. According to our latest Lifestyle Report, ABC Family is now the 7th most popular cable television network among females and 12th most popular among males. A year and half ago the network didn't even make the top 15 for either gender. The success can be attributed to a combination of airing re-runs of popular series that still remain popular with the audience along with new series that have become modest hits like "Kyle XY" and "Wildfire." In fact, "Kyle XY" is one of the best performing new cable series of the year so far among teen and young adult females. So, is the network a trailblazer or just a glutton for punishment? That remains to be seen, but all of the buzz and controversy around their latest endeavor will probably end up being a boon for initial viewership, which I imagine, is what they had in mind all along.
